Reviews are up for a pair of very different, yet sneakily similar, comedies, one that just opened and the other scheduled for this upcoming Friday, or late Thursday now.
The first is Hail, Caesar!, the latest by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen. With an outstanding ensemble of Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum and the thankfully now getting recognition Alden Ehrenreich, this Coen creation falls on the lower rung of their work. Profoundly fun here and there, the movie’s call back to a certain 50s-ish era of Hollywood can border on indulgent. A full review is here.
Also making nods to a particular genre, in this case the superhero one, Deadpool features the popular Merc with a Mouth; Marvel’s most vulgar and thoroughly insane sort-of-goodguy. Considerably more generic than its pokes and prods at its brethren implies, it nevertheless isn’t a complete waste of time. My long take on that one is here.
